Paul's Letter to the Ephesians

Ephesians Chapter 1

Introduction to Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians

The Epistle was written from prison in Rome approximately 62 A.D. In some of the older manuscripts the words “at Ephesus  are not found and corresponds to some of the early writings of Church leadership.  The explanation has been explained that this writing was likely copied and sent to various Churches and a space was left where the words “at Ephesus” appear so that they could be filled in with the appropriate Church being addressed.  Colossians 4:16 mentions a letter that Paul wrote to the Laodiceans, this is thought to be that letter.  This letter to the Ephesians is built on the foundations established in the Epistle to the Romans.  The city of Ephesus was a great commercial center of Asia Minor near the mouth of the river Cayster and was particularly known for its temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis (Diana) that is considered one of the wonders of the world.

What does Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians have in common with 1 John?

I.                   Salutation (Ephesians 1:1-2)

a.       Ephesians 1:1 - Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, to the saints which are at Ephesus, and to the faithful in Christ Jesus:

                                                             1.      Apostle - ἀπόστολος apostolos - a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders

                                                                                 i.      Who else was considered to be an “apostle”?

ii.      What was special about an apostle?

iii.      Who made Paul an apostle?

iv.      What is the difference between an apostle and a disciple?

o        Disciple - μαθητής mathētēs, a learner, pupil, disciple

o        An apostle is someone ordained by God to give a message whereas a disciple is a student

                                                             2.      Saints - ἅγιος hagios,  persons whose services God employs, set apart for God, to be exclusively His

                                                                                 i.      Who are considered to be saints?

ii.      What is a requirement to become a saint?

iii.      What is the difference between a saint and a disciple?

                                                             3.      Faithful - πιστός pistos, 1) persons who show themselves faithful in the transaction of business, the execution of commands, or the discharge of official duties 2) one who kept his plighted faith, worthy of trust 3) One who can be relied upon

                                                                                 i.      Is there a difference between a saint and the faithful?

ii.      Why is there a distinction made between the two?

iii.      Is it merely geographical in that Paul is writing specifically to the saints in Ephesus, but generally to any of the faithful to Jesus who read it that do not reside in Ephesus?

b.       Ephesians 1:2 – Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

                                                             1.      Grace - χάρις charis, 1) that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, lovliness: grace of speech 2) of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues (mentioned 12 times in this epistle)

                                                             2.      Peace - εἰρήνη eirēnē, the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot

                                                             3.      Why would it be necessary to bless the recipients with grace and peace from both God the Father AND from Jesus Christ?

II.                God’s Plan for Us (Ephesians 1:3-14)

a.       Ephesians 1:3 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

                                                             1.      The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ is also our Father

                                                             2.      God has blessed us with spiritual blessings, what is a spiritual blessing?

                                                             3.      How does a spiritual blessing differ from a physical blessing? Which is (should be) more desirable? Why?

                                                             4.      What are some examples of spiritual gifts? Are there any that you particularly desire? Any that you think you may already have?

                                                                                 i.      1 Corinthians 12:4-11 - Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.  And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.  And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.  But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.  For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

ii.      1 Corinthians 14:12 - Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

o        Church - ἐκκλησία ekklēsia, a gathering of citizens called out from their homes into some public place, an assembly

b.       Ephesians 1:4 – According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

                                                             1.      KEY VERSE

                                                             2.      What does it mean to have chosen us “in Him before the foundation of the world”? If God is all-knowing (which He is) then He has known about you for eternity

                                                             3.      Are there some who have not been chosen?

                                                                                 i.      Matthew 20:16 - So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

                                                             4.      Holy – ἅγιος hagios…same as saints in verse 1

                                                             5.      Without blame – ἄμωμος amōmos, morally: without blemish, faultless, unblameable.

                                                                                 i.      Is this possible?

ii.      Only by the power of the Holy Spirit woking through us.

c.       Ephesians 1:5 – Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

                                                             1.      Predestinated – προορίζω proorizō, to predetermine, decide beforehand, to forordain

                                                                                 i.      Acts 4:28For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.

ii.      Romans 8:29 – For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

                                                             2.      Adoption – υἱοθεσία huiothesia, that relationship which God was pleased to establish between himself and the Israelites in preference to all other nations

                                                                                 i.      How are the saints adopted by Christ to Himself?

ii.      Why is it God’s good pleasure?

d.       Ephesians 1:6 – To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

                                                             1.      He has made us accepted and beloved through His grace.

                                                             2.      What does it mean to be accepted in the beloved?

e.       Ephesians 1:7 – In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

                                                             1.      Redemption – ἀπολύτρωσις apolytrōsis, a releasing effected by payment of ransom

                                                             2.      What is the price of forgiveness of sins? Whatever the price, it can be found in the riches of His grace, his blood which was the payment for our release

f.        Ephesians 1:8 – Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

                                                             1.      abounded - περισσεύω perisseuō, to exceed a fixed number of measure, to be left over and above a certain number or measure

                                                             2.      God gives wisdom and prudence liberally, exceeding expectations

                                                                                 i.      James 1:5 - If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

g.       Ephesians 1:9 – Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

                                                             1.      Mystery – μυστήριον mystērion, generally mysteries, religious secrets, confided only to the initiated and not to ordinary mortals

                                                                                 i.      God’s will is a mystery only to those who do not seek Him, for He willingly reveals it to His children

ii.      If God reveals His will to us this demonstrates His love toward us

                                                             2.      God’s will is not based on anything external to Himself, it is wholly independent, purposed in Himself

h.       Ephesians 1:10 – That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

                                                             1.      Dispensation – οἰκονομία oikonomia, the management of a household or of household affairs

                                                                                 i.      The dispensation of the fullness of times is the management or putting in order things that transpire in the course of time both in heaven and on earth

                                                             2.      The Father chooses to manage His affairs through His Son

i.         Ephesians 1:11 In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:

                                                             1.      Inheritance – κληρόω klēroō, to make a lot, i.e. a heritage, private possession

                                                             2.      Predestinated - προορίζω proorizō, to predetermine, decide beforehand

                                                             3.      Christ being in charge of managing His Father affairs, gives a lot to those who are predestined to receive it

                                                                                 i.      Does this indicate that there are some who are not predestined to receive an inheritance?

j.         Ephesians 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.

                                                             1.      Those who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

k.       Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

                                                             1.      Word of truth:

                                                                                 i.      Word - λόγος logos, a word, uttered by a living voice, embodies a conception or idea…

ii.      Truth - ἀλήθεια alētheia, what is true in any matter under consideration…what is true in things appertaining to God and the duties of man, moral and religious truth

                                                             2.      Sealed – σφραγίζω sphragizō, to set a seal upon, mark with a seal, to seal

l.         Ephesians 1:14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

                                                             1.      Earnest – ἀρραβών arrabōn, money which in purchases is given as a pledge or downpayment that the full amount will subsequently be paid

                                                                                 i.      So the down payment, the pledge given for our inheritance is being sealed by the holy Spirit of promise…The Promise!

ii.      2 Corinthians 1:22 - Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

                                                             2.      What is the purchased possession Paul is referring to here?

                                                                                 i.      We are!!!

ii.      Have we been redeemed?  According to this verse we are awaiting our redemption

                                                             3.      Who is the “buyer”?

                                                                                 i.      The Father, with the blood of His Son (according to 1:5)

III.             Paul’s Exhortation (Ephesians 1:15-23)

a.       Ephesians 1:15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

                                                             1.      When you have faith in the Lord and show it through your love, news travels.  Paul heard it through the grape vine how these Ephesians demonstrated their faith and love for the Lord

                                                                                 i.      Do we demonstrate our faith and love in a way that gets other talking?

ii.      Matthew 5:16 – Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

                                                             2.

b.       Ephesians 1:16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

                                                             1.      When we hear of the faith of other saints and their love for one another, what is the appropriate response?

                                                                                 i.      Continually give thanks

ii.      Mention the faithful in our prayers

                                                             2.      Are we to give thanks for our fellow believers occasionally? Not according to this verse it says to Cease not.

                                                                                 i.      How do we “cease not”?

c.       Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

                                                             1.      In addition to grace and peace, Paul now prays that the saints receive :

                                                                                 i.      The spirit of wisdom

o        Proverbs 3:19 - The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

ii.      Revelation of knowledge of Him

o        Proverbs 3:20 - By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

                                                             2.      Proverbs 3:21-22 - My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.

d.       Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

                                                             1.      What does the phrase “the eyes of your understanding” mean?

                                                             2.      What is the hope of His calling?

                                                             3.      What are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints?

e.       Ephesians 1:19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

f.        Ephesians 1:20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

                                                             1.      Who raised Christ from the dead?

                                                                                 i.      Here it states that the Father of glory (v.17) did

                                                             2.      Who will raise us from the dead?

                                                                                 i.      1 Corinthians 6:14 And God both raised up the Lord, and will also raise us by his own power.

                                                             3.      Where is Christ now? At the right hand of the Father, in the heavenly places

                                                                                 i.      Why is he there? He was “set” there by the Father

ii.      Psalm 110:1 – The LORD said unto my Lord, sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

                                                             4.

g.       Ephesians 1:21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

                                                             1.      Christ is set above 5 things that encompasses everything:

                                                                                 i.      Principality - ἀρχή archē, the first place, principality, rule, magistracy

ii.      Power - ἐξουσία exousia, the power of rule or government (the power of him whose will and commands must be submitted to by others and obeyed)

iii.      Might - δύναμις dynamis, strength power, ability

iv.      Dominion - κυριότης kyriotēs, dominion, power, lordship

                                                                               v.      Every name that is named - ὄνομα onoma , (name) the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for one's rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc.

                                                             2.      Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against the spiritual wickedness in high places.

                                                                                 i.      So the things that we “wrestle” against are those things that are placed under the authority of Christ

ii.      When we act as an agent of Christ, conforming to His will, we carry His authority and those same things are then placed under us, but when we operate outside of His will we do not carry His authority and are overcome by His enemies.

h.       Ephesians 1:22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

                                                             1.      Paul clarifies to leave no doubt that ALL things have been put under His feet

                                                             2.      All - πᾶς pas  each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything

i.         Ephesians 1:23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

                                                             1.      The church here is said to be His body, the body of Christ

                                                             2.      The ekklēsia is the fullness of Him that filleth all in all, the ekklēsia does not filleth all in all but is the fullness of Him that does.

                                                                                 i.      Fullness - πληρόω plēroō,  that which is (has been) filled

ii.      The assembly of believers is filled by Him by Him that filleth all in all

iii.      James Moffett Translation –  Which is His body, filled by Him who fills the universe entirely.

                                                             3.      Is the entire church also considered the bride of Christ? Or like Adam (Christ is said to be the last Adam, 1 Corinthians 15:45) is there a portion of his body removed and reserved to become the bride?

 Ephesians Chapter 2

 I.                   God’s Power Overcomes the Deficiencies of Man (Ephesians 2:1-10)

a.       Ephesians 2:1 – And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

1.       Those in sin are dead in sin

2.       What kind of sin is Paul referring? He does not specify thus we must conclude that he is referring to all sin

b.       Ephesians 2:2 - Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

1.       To be in sin is to be conformed to this world

i.         Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

2.       Prince - ἄρχων archōn, a ruler, commander, chief, leader

i.         2 Corinthians 4:4 - In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

ii.       The prince of the power of the air and the god of this world are the same

3.       What does it mean to walk according to the course of this world?

4.       Who is the prince of the power of the air? Satan

i.         The air is represented as the seat of his kingdom: and it was the opinion of both Jews and heathens that the air is full of spirits, and that there they exercise and exert themselves. The devil seems to have some power (by God's permission) in the lower region of the air; there he is at hand to tempt men, and to do as much mischief to the world as he can…Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Ephesians

5.       What defines a child of disobedience? Those whom the spirit of the prince of the power of the air works

i.         Ephesians 5:6 – Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

ii.       Colossians 3:5-7 - Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

                                                                                                   i.                                          God’s wrath is reserved for the children of disobedience

ii.                                          Children of disobedience are children of wrath

c.       Ephesians 2:3 - Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

1.       Who had these conversations? WE ALL

2.       Why is fulfilling the desire of the flesh and of the mind deemed bad here? Flesh and mind are our natural tendencies, our nature and our nature is to be disobedient.  To be obedient is to go against our nature.

i.         2 Corinthians 7:1 - Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

3.       What are we all by nature? Children of wrath

d.       Ephesians 2:4 - But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

1.       God’s mercy stems from His love for us; He is rich in mercy because He IS love

e.       Ephesians 2:5 - Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

1.       Why does Paul say we were dead in sin?  Were we dead?

2.       God has quickened or made us alive in Christ and it is by His grace

i.         John 8:12 - Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

f.        Ephesians 2:6 - And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

1.       How are we raised? Together

2.       Christ sits in the heavenly places at the right hand of the Father

g.       Ephesians 2:7 - That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

1.     Ages – αἰών aiōn, for ever, an unbroken age, perpetuity of time, eternity

2.       What does it mean the ages to come?

h.       Ephesians 2:8 - For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

1.       KEY VERSE

2.       How are we saved? By grace…through faith

i.         His grace is only accessed through faith

3.       Gift - δῶρον dōron, a gift, present

i.         Which is the gift, grace or salvation?

ii.       Grace is the gift and it is by that grace we are saved it is a gift from God for those who believe and put their faith in Him

i.         Ephesians 2:9 - Not of works, lest any man should boast.

4.       Why is God’s grace a gift instead of something we can earn? Because God does not want anyone to think they are capable of earning something that is priceless.

i.         It’s like a poor person who has a life threatening illness that will take millions of dollars to treat; there is no way he/she could ever earn enough to pay the medical bills, but the doctors treat them anyhow. In this situation, life cannot be earned it can only be obtained as a gift.

ii.       Think about what it would look like if it could be earned, people would strive focused on the required tasks to achieve the reward.  By making salvation a gift, God removes our tendency to focus on the required tasks.

iii.      If grace could be earned that would put a price tag on something priceless, no one would ever be able to purchase such a thing.  The only way that we could possibly obtain it would be for God to freely give it to us, and this passage tells us that He does just that!J

5.       Just because we can’t earn our salvation by works, does that mean we shouldn’t actively work and demonstrate our faith?

i.         James 2:26 - For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

a.       Ephesians 3:1  - For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,

1.      Why does Paul say that he is a “prisoner of Christ, how does this differ from what Jesus said in John 8:36 “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”?

e.       Ephesians 3:5  - Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;

2.      Now it is revealed to His apostles and the prophets by the Spirit

iii.      Here it is the Holy Spirit, the great revealer

3.      Paul says that God’s grace was revealed unto the apostles and the prophets, they were not necessarily chosen as steward to reveal it to us, Paul uses the writings of the prophets to relay this meassage of grace.

h.       Ephesians 3:8  - Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

1.       Humility in that he considers himself the least, but the grace that was shown him by God’s calling to be a stward of that grace is what qualifies him to preach to those who are outside the covenant the riches of God that cannot be found by searching, only revealed by His Spirit

i.         Ephesians 3:9  - And to make all [men] see what [is] the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

d.      Ephesians 3:17  - That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

1.       How can Christ “dwell in your hearts”?

2.       When Christ dwells in our hears we are:

i.         Rooted in love

·        Rooted - ῥιζόω rhizoō, verb - to cause to strike root, to strengthen with roots, to render firm, to fix, establish, cause a person or a thing to be thoroughly grounded

o       Grounded in love

·        Grounded - θεμελιόω themelioō, verb, 1) to lay the foundation, to found 2) to make stable, establish

o       What is the difference?

·        Some understand it of their being settled and established in the sense of God's love to them, which would inspire them with greater ardours of holy love to him, and to one another

e.       Ephesians 3:18  - May be able to comprehend with all saints what [is] the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

1.       Here we have love an non-material object being measured by units normally reserved for material measurement.

2.       Can love manifest in the material?  Does it fill the whole of the universe, how is it possible to put a limit on the breadth for example?  As far as the east is from the west

a.       Ephesians 4:1  - I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

1.       Paul is not ashamed of his chains so that his audience might recognize that there are things in life (namely the service of Jesus Christ) that are worthy of bondage.  He is not suffering as one who has committed a crime, but as one who obedient to the utmost calling.

2.       The mere fact that Paul was willing to suffer for his commitment to his calling is evidence to show that Paul truly believed in his mission and Paul has demonstrated clearly through all of his other writings that he is not an ignorant man, but brilliant.

3.       If we are to follow the doctrine of Paul to the point of bondage, let it be of comfort that we are in the company of a man who demonstrates unequalled devotion to the calling of God.

4.       Paul is not asking for pity or to be sent anything that would ease his discomfort, he is pouring out all that he has to his brothers and sisters in Christ.

b.      Ephesians 4:2  - With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

g.       Ephesians 4:7  - But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

1.        Christ not only gives differing gifts, but differing measures of those gifts

2.       This should never be a point of contention since all gifts come from the same giver and all are given with the same purpose…to help others and to further the Kingdom

3.       We are all given a measure of grace, thus, in turn we are expected to give a measure of grace to those whom may be indebted to us

h.       Ephesians 4:8  - Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

2.       When did this happen?  “When He ascended up on high”

i.         Ephesians 4:9  - (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?

j.        Ephesians 4:10  - He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

k.      Ephesians 4:11  - And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

·        The work of the ministry

                                                                                       i.      Edifying of the body of Christ

m.     Ephesians 4:13  - Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

a.       Indicates that at some point in the future we will all come in unity, not there yet obviously

n.       Ephesians 4:14  - That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

1.       When we are measured by the fullness of Christ, we are established in His doctrine

2.       We are no longer deceived by the “wind of doctrine” or fraudulent teachings of men who are beguiled by the wicked one

                                                                                             i.      1 Timothy 4:1 - Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils

But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues

3.       “They lie in wait to deceive” Why?

                                                                                             i.      That they might bring us into bondage

ii.      Galatians 2:4 - And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage:

c.      Ephesians 4:18  - Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

ii.      Since Jesus IS the light of the worlds, when we don’t follow Jesus we have no light, thus our understanding is darkened.

4.      What does it mean to be alienated from God through ignorance?

d.       Ephesians 5:11 - And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

2.       Paul contrast the sin of theft with the virtue of giving

                                                                                       i.      Stealing depends on the laboring of the hands of others,

Amen.

2.       Colossians 1:24 - 28 - Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church: Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfil the word of God; [Even] the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what [is] the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:

That you may not think that the Jews only, to whom God gave the land of Canaan, were bound by the fifth commandment, he here gives it a further sense, That it may be well with thee, etc. Outward prosperity and long life are blessings promised to those who keep this commandment. This is the way to have it well with us, and obedient children are often rewarded with outward prosperity. 1.       Are we able to stand against the wiles of the devil on our own? No, we need to be equipped with effective armor OF GOD

2.       No armaments that are of men will be effective in the least against a superior enemy

3.       We are to put on the WHOLE armor for its only by the WHOLE armor that we can stand.  Going into battle a warrior would want every vital organ to be protected, in spiritual battle we have different “vital organs”, if we do not incorporate the WHOLE armor our enemy will find a weakness and exploit it!

c.       Ephesians 6:12  - For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places].

1.       The combat for which we are to be prepared is not against ordinary human enemies, not barely against men compounded of flesh and blood, nor against our own corrupt natures singly considered, but against the several ranks of devils, who have a government which they exercise in this world. Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Ephesians

2.       Satan’s seat is atop of this world, and empire of darkness

3.       The devil is our enemy and he is a wicked spirit and thus he has an advantage, we have a host of spiritual enemies with which we blindly wrestle.  It is only through the lens of the Holy Spirit and His gifts that we are rightly able to discern the enemy.

4.       This is a difficult concept to comprehend.  People are not the enemy, the spirit behind their actions may be, but they are not.  The source of all conflict lies in the unseen spiritual realm controlled by the prince of the power of the air, who exploits the weakness of our flesh.  No matter how evil, cruel or inhumane an individual may appear, they are a mere puppet in the hand of our true enemy.  There is an orchestra of evil and our chief adversary is the conductor.  These “kingdoms” work in unison: media, government, education, healthcare, financial, food/water/air supply, religious, environment/energy and science/technology.  When we walk by faith and not mere sight these become more evident.

d.      Ephesians 6:13  - Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

1.       James 4:7 - …Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

2.       1 Chronicles 21:1 - And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

i.         He stands against us; therefore, we should stand against him

ii.       To stand against Satan is to strive against sin

3.       Romans 13:12 - The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

4.       2 Corinthians 6:7 - By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

i.         It should be noted that all of the armor about to be listed are for the front of the body, the back lay exposed; therefore, we must not run in fear

5.       What is the “evil day”

i.         The day of temptation?

ii.       The days of tribulation or affliction?

e.       Ephesians 6:14  - Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

1.       Isaiah 11:5 - And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

i.         We are to emulate Christ and Christ is girded with righteousness

ii.       The first piece of armor mentioned is truth…all other pieces of armor are dependent upon this girding

iii.      Jeremiah 13:11 - For as the girdle cleaveth to the loins of a man, so have I caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.

2.       1 Thessalonians 5:8 - But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

i.         By Faith we are united to Christ

ii.       By Love we are united to the brethren

iii.      The breastplate protects all of the vital organs, just as the righteousness of Christ protects all of our spiritual vitals

f.        Ephesians 6:15  - And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

1.       Suggests an deliberate adherence to the Gospel

2.       Walking a life of repentance and humility ensures a defense against stumbling when temptations are encountered

g.       Ephesians 6:16  - Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

1.       Why is faith above all?  Because it is adaptable to the situation just like a shield can be moved to the area of your body that is under attack; faith is adaptable and can be maneuvered to strengthen the established armor previously mentioned.  We may not have all truth, and we may have areas of unrighteousness in our lives and we may not fully grasp the gospel, but by faith they are strengthened.

h.       Ephesians 6:17  - And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

1.       The assurance of salvation in Christ Jesus protects our mind from the lies of the enemy, just like a helmet protects us from blows to the head.  By providing a sword, our advocate Christ Jesus assures us that we don’t need to sit back and allow the enemy to continue pounding against the armor, but we have the power to offensively pursue him and vanquish him from our lives.

2.       The helmet secures the head. A good hope of salvation, well founded and well built, will both purify the soul and keep it from being defiled by Satan, and it will comfort the soul and keep it from being troubled and tormented by Satan. He would tempt us to despair; but good hope keeps us trusting in God, and rejoicing in him.  Matthew Henry’s Commentary on Ephesians

3.       Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

i.         Ephesians 6:18  - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

1.       We have the armor for self-preservation and we have prayer, a direct line of communication to our Heavenly Father, to call in air support for our brothers and sisters in need.  Don’t give up!  Don’t give in!  Our salvation draws nigh!

2.       All saints, fellow servants, are in need of our prayers
